Central Asian delegation discusses data centres at Techritory 2026

A delegation from Central Asia was in Riga last week for Techritory 2026, the digitalisation and connectivity forum held at ATTA Centre on 21–22 October. The visit was organised through the C4CA (Connectivity for Central Asia) project.

The group included delegates from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan. Over two days they attended forum sessions on Europe’s digital partnerships abroad, satellite connectivity and data centres. They also met Latvian companies one to one.

The main event of the visit was on Thursday afternoon: a three-hour roundtable called “Data Centers and Regional Digital Infrastructure - Cooperation in Central Asia.” The discussion focused on how Central Asian countries can build data centres that are secure and reliable, and on where European money and know-how could help.

The discussion covered who controls a data centre and where data is stored. Participants also talked about how to protect these facilities from cyberattacks and outages. Several Central Asian countries are building new data centres right now, and the speakers from the region said they want to get the security side right from the start rather than fix it later. European participants shared how the EU approaches the protection of critical digital infrastructure.

Data centres need large amounts of stable power. The open question is how to use those resources without overloading the grid or relying on sources that are bad for the climate. Latvenergo, Latvia’s main energy company, and TET, a telecoms and data centre operator, described how this works in Latvia, from securing a reliable power supply to keeping data centre services running.

The Central Asian side made it clear throughout the day that they want to work with the European Union. The delegates said they are open to regular contact with European institutions and companies. They see this as a way to make their data centers safer and to build them in a way that will last. Both sides agreed to keep the conversation going after the forum.
